Clean Eats For Breakfast!

By October 14, 2010November 23rd, 2022Recipes

While driving home from Saturday morning’s Beach Blast Workout I was distracted with a car pileup in the next lane over. This holdup was due to an overflow of cars in the Mc Donalds Drive Through!! I could not believe it! Wait a second…… Yes I can! With so many people (not just Americans) choosing fast food it’s no wonder obesity and diabetes are on the rise.

I know most everyone is pressed for time in the morning and there is a danger of trading a healthy breakfast for nothing at all, or for something sugary, greasy or fat laden at the drive-thru. To prevent this from happening to you, I’m going to give you some great breakfast ideas which are packed with the nutrients you need to get you through the day and keep you healthy and lean!

Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a super food! Just one cup cooked contains 8 grams of fiber, which accounts for almost a third of the recommended daily amount. Try adding the following for extra flavor & nutrients: berries, dates, raisins, applesauce, honey, agave nectar, cinnamon, nutmeg, pecans, walnuts, flax seed, wheat germ, bee pollen, orange peel.

Egg Whites
Egg whites are very low in calories, have no fat, no cholesterol, and are loaded with protein. There are 80 calories from an egg and only 20 in the white. Egg whites can be paired with whole wheat toast, oatmeal, whole wheat english muffins, whole wheat tortilla, healthy waffles & pancakes and whatever else you can think up!

Protein Pancakes

Protein Pancakes are fast, healthy and tasty! High protein combined with soluble fiber will keep you going when you are on the run. In fact, I prebake these and keep them in the freezer so I can grab and go in the am!

The sky is the limit for what you can put in these. I simply whisk together oatmeal, egg whites, cinnamon & vanilla extract and cook until the pancake firms. I then top with berries and a very small drizzle of organic maple syrup. However, below is an actual recipe 

1/3 cup old-fashioned oatmeal
4 egg whites
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
Cooking Spray

*You can also add 1 tbsp natural peanut butter and/or 1 tbsp Vanilla Protein Powder

Combine first 4 ingredients (and peanut butter if you choose) in a medium-sized mixing bowl, mix fr 30 seconds- 1 minute. Lightly spray the skillet with cooking spray and preheat at medium setting. Pour batter and cook until pancake firms, then flip and cook on the other side.

Top with cinnamon, berries (thawed or fresh), applesauce, or organic maple syrup.

*This recipe can also be made into an Easy Waffle! Speaking of waffles- They have come out with many organic non-bleached waffle mixes as well as buckwheat & whole wheat. You can also find some great frozen brands in the organic section.

Healthy Nutritious Cereals
Cereal is a great breakfast option- Especially when you need something fast. However, you want to avoid cereals that are loaded with sugar and preservatives. A few brands I recommend are: Cascadian Farms, Ezekiel, Kashi, Nature’s Path, Newman’s Own, Back to Nature and Bear Naked. Try to keep the sugar under 10 grams- Sorry No Lucky Charms!

Pair your cereal with:

Organic Milk
Soy Milk
Rice Milk
Hemp Milk
Almond Milk

*Make sure these are Organic and low in sugar

*If you have been to the Grocery Store Tour, you know Ezekiel products are among my favorite! They are live-grain products including cereals, muffins, bread, wraps, bagels, energy bars, pita breads 7 pastas. All Health Food Stores and most Publix’s carry Ezekiel products.

Egg White Omelets
With so many quick ways to make a healthy omelet there’s no excuse not to have a healthy breakfast 
There are so many ways to jazz up your omelet try adding any of the following: peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach, soy cheese or organic cheese, salsa, chives, tomatoes, fresh cilantro, black olives, asparagus, avocado, feta cheese

Healthy Breakfast Sandwiches
Between two pieces of whole wheat toast or whole wheat english muffin add egg whites, turkey bacon (Organic & under 350 mg sodium), organic cheese or soy cheese for a delicious healthy breakfast sandwich!

Banana Wrap up or Homemade protein Bars
Grab one of these on the early morning go! The banana wrap up is a banana, 2 tbsp natural nut butter and 1 tsp honey all rolled into a whole wheat tortilla. You can add slivered almonds or other nuts.

*Check out one of our Past Recipe Blogs for a Homemade Protein Bar recipe.

Yogurt or Soy Yogurt
Try topping with granola and/or fruit. Make sure your granola & yogurt is low in sugar and not artificially flavored. Organic, soy or Greek yogurt is the way to go!

There you have it! A ton of Healthy Breakfast Ideas so you will get a great breakfast in and be less likely to snack on sugar-laden or greasy junk food throughout the day!
